Hello there! I’m Raquel, and I’d like to welcome you to StrongholdMom.com, where I write about my adventures in Marriage, Parenting, Health, Fitness and Christian Living. A little more about me:
Thank you to Passion Planner for taking time to capture a small piece of my life! It was an honor. Check it out here, and then circle back to read more about me.

Wife to Mike: I’ve been married to my husband since November 2007. We met on my 2nd day of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Class and he was my training partner that day. I was the new girl, he was the single Purple Belt. It was love at first Triangle. ;] We share a lot of loves for the same things, but our personalities are pretty much night and day. His strengths are my weaknesses, and vice versa. Corny as it may sound, we do complete each other. :]
Mom of 4: I have 4 kids: Jacob (8), Michaela (6) and Nichola (4) and Caleah (17 months). Nope, none of my kids were planned. Actually each child was a surprise, but the best things in life are always unplanned! Although crazy at times, I love being a mom, and love my kids to pieces. I’d have 12 if I could. Really.
Health Nut: Honest truth, I wasn’t always dedicated to eating healthy. I’ve grown up with auto-immune disorders all my life and struggled with obesity on and off. During that time I was content eating junk food day in and day out. It wasn’t until after I had kids that those disorders began to get worse. I decided I needed to take better myself by paying more attention to the kind of food I was feeding myself and my family.
Jiu Jitsu Fan: In 2005, I asked a good friend what martial art would be beneficial for Women’s Self Defense, and he recommended Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The day I started, I was hooked. I could possibly thank my husband for that too.
CrossFitter: I first learned about CrossFit through my husband in 2007. I was a gym rat for years but was so bored working out alone and the mundane routine. I was intrigued how CrossFit integrated different fitness styles in its workouts: Kettlebells, Olympic Lifting, Gymnastics, Running, Rowing, etc. Every day was different and I appreciated the CrossFit community aspect. I became a CrossFit Level 1 Coach in September 2011, and in the near future I’m hoping to become CrossFit Olympic Lifting certified.
Entrepreneur: I own The Stronghold with my husband and brother. We first opened our doors in Point Loma in 2007 and offer CrossFit and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Adults and Kids. We also have a location in Eastlake and Rancho Bernardo. The gym’s name comes from the Scripture: Psalm 18:2: The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my STRONGHOLD.
Follower of Jesus: I’ve been a Christian since childhood, but I didn’t fully grasp the true meaning of being a follower until my mid-twenties (which I might add, was 3 years ago!). Although it’s been a bumpy road at times, God has always pulled me through the craziest of fires, and he’s blessed me with a beautiful life and family. I love sharing my faith to those who have an open ear. If you haven’t noticed already, Jesus is my Stronghold. :]
Disney Lover: I’m a lover of all things Disney. I’ve been an Annual Passholder to Disneyland for as long as I can remember and take my kids often. One thing on my bucket list is to visit every Disney Park in the world. So far I’ve been to Disneyland Paris for our honeymoon, and we take a biannual (every 2 years) trip to Disney World. Although we’re on a collecting hiatus, my family loves Vinylmation figures. Need to trade a few? Let me know, I might have something you want!
