Family Movie Review: The Boxtrolls

My family and I sat down for Movie Night In to watch The Boxtrolls and I was pleased to say it was a heart warming film chock full of life lessons for kids. Eggs is an orphan boy who was raised by boxtrolls underground, away from the world. Unfortunately because of the selfish desires of a man named Archibald Snatcher, the boxtrolls were wrongfully accused of eating children and adults alike. The whole town came to fear the boxtrolls and rooted for their extermination. The story unfolds about the true background of Eggs and the boxtrolls which reveals the evil plan of Snatcher.

The Boxtrolls is a great movie that can teach kids about helping others and dealing with prejudice (which can even happen with kids at a young age). I also appreciated the lessons about fathers and sons, since this is such an important concept with our families today. The lessons that were displayed about finding the courage to fight for what you believe in were my husband’s favorites and my kids really enjoyed the boxtrolls’ funny personalities and quirks. The most humorous thing our family could relate to is Snatcher’s cheese allergy since some of our kids do have allergies to dairy!

One thing to note is that this movie may be suitable for kids 5 and over as some of the scenes may be a bit frightening to toddlers. Other than that I would definitely recommend for families to have The Boxtrolls in their movie library. It is now available on DVD and Blu-ray for your family’s enjoyment! If you have seen the movie, what was your favorite part? Let me know in the comments below!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary DVD/Blu-Ray copy of The Boxtrolls from Allied Media. All thoughts are my own.
